Breath

One thing we do everyday and we sometimes forget to do is to breath. Of course you’ll never really “forget” to do it because it comes so naturally from our body. But how about concentrating nothing but breathing. When did you do it last time ?

It’s such a great feeling, to feel the cool air flow into your lung, go through your body and your mind, slowly out of your nose along with all the worries. In Hindu yoga, breathing is called “Pranayama“. It connects deeply with our mind and body, leads you into a hynosis state.

Before my morning yoga, I usually drop one essential oil in my palm and breath deeply into it, it takes me immediately into the yogi mood. Among which I use most often are Frankincense, wild orange and peppermint.

Here’s an article about the unity of yoga and essential oil from DoTERRA.

Strictly speaking, yoga is composed of three parts, in my opinion: asanas (physical postures), pranayama (breathing technique), and meditation. Yet, it’s not obvious to combine all three of them, it takes a lot of time and practise. However like everything, it’s essential to start somewhere, the rest is just the journey, you don’t have to worry anything anymore, since what’s important is not the destination but the journey.

Namaste.

To meet your soul

Few days ago, I met a couple who works for “doTerra“, an America based essential oil company, which awake my interests to the oil. My knowledge to oils are limited, I know they can be used aromatically and with or without dilution. But I didn’t know if the oil is pure enough they can even be used internally. For example, add a only one drop of lemon/peppermint oil to water or tea.

Jökulsárlon – Iceland

I always believe we are what we eat and be the food your medicine . The history of Chinese herbology or Zhong Yao in Chinese can back to 2800 BC. I still remember when I was little, my grandmother boiled herbs, the smell is “awful” if you are not used to it. But when you drink it, first it’s very bitter, then come the scene of sweet and fruity. You can even addicted to it. Unlike the western medicine, which has most often immediate effect on your body, the Chinese herbs work slowly but entirely from inside out of your body.

The nature has a lot to offer. We should respect and be humble. There’s lady named Kristbjörg in Iceland, she established a company “Blómadropa” (flower drops in English). She was first of all a yoga teacher and a spiritual flower hunter as I like to call. She will go to the very remote area in Iceland, meditate in the mountains and pick up wild Icelandic flowers, then refine the essential oil from the flowers. Very similar to the essential oils that I know of, they are from flowers.

Yesterday after dinner, I had a friend coming for a long chat. We started talking about the babies, relationships etc. She herself is a mother of two beautiful children and a learnt yoga teacher. She also believe very much in the power of Nature and meditation. She gave me some advices on how to meditate as beginner. She said you could imagine yourself a flower. And you slowly climbing on to the pedals, then inside the flower, be there, observe the flower around you, protect you, give you energy, and slowly climb down when you finished. Another way to meditate is to scan your body, from the top of you head to the tip or your toes.

Nowadays, everyone is busy occupying others’ business. What we should do, is to sit quietly and have a conversation with our inner soul. How’s your body feel like ? What’s on your mind ? Do you truly love yourself ?

Happiness is not about having a lot, but being “careless”.

Over the weekend, we drove to Selfoss, where one of the biggest National Park of Iceland is. It was 50-year-old birthday of a friend.

It was so beautiful on the way, snow covering the mountains, mosses, and the sky, it was kind of blue that take your breath away.

I feel very lucky every time I see the landscape like this.

The hotel we stayed called “Borealis“, very warming and family-friendly atmosphere. The party went very well, I even saw the Northern light after dinner. They were so bright and dancing through the sky.

Happiness is as simple as that, it’s not about having a lot of “stuff”, but being a bit “careless”. We should live in harmony and sometimes think in other people’s shoes, let go things. What belongs to you will eventually come to you, what doesn’t belong to you, whatever you do, it will only go away from you.

Moonrise Kingdom

The moon has been incredibly beautiful these days in Iceland.

We will not be able to see moon in such a clear sky and without any disturb in big cities.

That’s one of the beauties in Iceland, you see well, you breath well and that gives you time to look inside yourself.

Every time when I look at the sea, I feel freedom and very very graceful.

Celebrate life

I’m not a religious person, yet it interests me to understand religion. And I do think that it’s necessary and important to have faith.

“I believe that God has created each soul, that that soul belongs to God, and that each soul has to find God in its own lifetime and enter into his life. That is what is important. All of us need to seek God and find him.”
– Mother Teresa

It doesn’t matter who is the God. Religion is a worship to God, therefore it is a matter of conscience. Each one of us must decide who we are going to worship.

Many people that I know they are religious because of their families. They are born in that environment, therefore it is natural for them to be involved.

Mother Teresa also said the meaning of life is to love and to be loved, and it should be celebrated with great joy. Learn to be humble and forgive. The power of giving. Be faithful in little things. Smile to everyone. Pray and love and live everyday as it were the last day of our lives.

What a wonderful world.

Summer has finally arrived. Even in the most northern capital city, Reykjavik, it’s 17 degrees here. I can clearly feel the joy of people and flowers are blooming in our greenhouse.

In the restaurant, we use flowers in the salad, not only it’s beautiful also it add flavours. I love decorating the plate. Like we always say “eyes eat first”. It somehow raise my childhood interests – animals and plants. I started looking for information about flowers. It amazed me when I know that strawberries are from flowers, it’s the final production of a plant, like nuts of  trees. And spring onions, the most humble vegetables, have those beautiful purple flowers. When you take a close look at a flower, you can actually see a world, a wonderful world.

“Happiness is a switch that you flick in your brain”

I read this sentence today on The Talks , interviewing Tom Ford.

I learned that happiness for all of us is a switch that you flick in your brain. It doesn’t have anything to do with getting a new house, a new car, a new girlfriend, or a new pair of shoes. Our culture is very much about that; we are never happy with what we have today. We always think that we need something else to be happy.

It’s very true. We’re always seeking what we don’t have, picking into other people’s life and forget to appreciate what we’re having ! We’re so greedy that it seems nothing is enough for us. But this is so wrong. It’s the opposite, we’re having too much of everything. Too much of clothing, too much of food, too much of electronic equipment ,etc.

As a great designer, something he said also moved me a lot,

How would you describe your current state of mind?

I feel that I don’t need anything for a good life. I grew up in New Mexico and the older I get I have less need for contemporary culture and big cities and all the stuff we are bombarded with. I am happier at my ranch in the middle of nowhere watching a bug carry leaves across the grass, listening to silence, riding my horse, and being in open space. So I have some sort of security that if I lost everything in my life, I would be very happy with the simple things because they are the ones that are important.

Do you get the most inspiration from nature? It is the ultimate beauty, after all.

Yes, nature is the closest thing to God and I don’t mean God by any sort of religion but by the connection to the universe, which I think we have lost. The American Indians had that and where I live is actually the center of the Anasazi Indian civilization. I even have two huge Anasazi ruins on the property of my ranch. I am not saying that there definitely is some sort of spirituality coming from there, but there might be. When you are close to the earth and you get up when the sun comes up and you go to sleep when it goes down, it puts everything in perspective.

Really?

Yes, all the rest of this crap just fades away. We’ve lost our contact with the earth. Dogs don’t have guilt, dogs don’t have insecurity complexes, dogs don’t think that they need a bigger house than the other dog. Dogs are just completely themselves. They’re very in touch, they’re not thinking about their death. They are just rolling on their back, enjoying what that feels like. I think that is sort of the appeal of animals in our lives; that is what’s important.

Yes, NATURE NATURE NATURE.

I can promise you, nothing will make you feel more free than feeling the breeze on your face, smell the salt from the sea, feel the temperature of water or running like a kid in a corn filed. We need that contact with the earth. It’s essential, it’s what all life about. Being connected, to people but also to the earth.

Since I got that new job in AALTO Bistro as a helping hand in the kitchen. I am very HAPPY. I just love my job, whatever it’s watering planting, washing dishes, running up and downs, switching my brain from English to Icelandic, sweeping floors, chopping onions, peeling vegetables, frying potato pancakes in 50+ degrees, I’m just enjoying doing it. Because this is something interests me and I know how to do it, so why not put my soul into it?

I’ve been dreaming of being a chef almost since I’m a kid, I see myself starting my day in the kitchen, preparing food and now I’m here. Who knows maybe in ten years, I would able to open my own restaurant.

It’s true that life is a box of chocolate, we never know what we gonna get. Yet, enjoy every single piece of chocolate you get, the crunchiness of the chocolate, the bitterness, the sweetness, maybe a bit sour taste as well? And what about the heart? Just close your eyes and enjoy as much as you can. I promise you, happiness is no more complicated than that.
